Emergency Sewage Cleanup: What to Expect
What happens during professional emergency sewage cleanup. Timeline, process, costs, and what you need to do as the homeowner.
When sewage backs up into your home, professional cleanup is essential. Knowing what to expect from the process helps reduce stress during an already difficult situation.
When We Arrive
Our emergency team arrives equipped with full personal protective equipment, commercial-grade extraction pumps, EPA-registered disinfectants, containment materials, and industrial drying equipment. The first step is a safety assessment to determine the extent of contamination and plan the cleanup approach.
Phase 1: Extraction (Hours 1-4)
All standing sewage water is removed using specialized pumps and extraction equipment. This phase moves quickly because the longer sewage water sits, the more damage it causes and the greater the health risk.
Phase 2: Material Removal (Hours 4-8)
All contaminated porous materials must be removed. This typically includes carpet and carpet padding, affected drywall (usually cut 12-24 inches above the water line), baseboards and trim, insulation, and any personal belongings that cannot be safely decontaminated. These materials are bagged and disposed of according to biohazard regulations.
Phase 3: Disinfection (Day 2)
All remaining surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with EPA-registered antimicrobial agents. This includes walls, subfloors, framing, concrete, and any salvageable contents. Multiple applications may be needed to ensure complete decontamination.
Phase 4: Drying (Days 2-5)
Industrial dehumidifiers and air movers dry the affected area. Daily moisture monitoring ensures all materials reach safe moisture levels before reconstruction begins.
Phase 5: Restoration (Days 5+)
Once the area is clean, dry, and certified safe, restoration begins. This includes replacing drywall, flooring, baseboards, and any other removed materials. The goal is to return your home to its pre-loss condition.
Your Role as Homeowner
Stay out of contaminated areas. Document everything for your insurance claim. Provide access to your property. Make decisions about salvageable items. Communicate with your insurance company (or let us do it for you).
